モレキュラーシーブは、均一なミクロポーラス構造を持つ立方格子の一種のシリコアルミネート化合物です。穴の直径は均一で、小さな直径の分子を細孔空洞に吸着させ、極性、飽和度、分子サイズ、沸点の異なる分子を分離することができます。つまり、分子をスクリーニングする機能があるため、モレキュラーシーブと呼ばれます。
